ATL: Schools and colleges must promote and support equality
Monday, July 7 2008
Commenting on the speech by Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg to campaign group, Stonewall, Daniela Wachsening, policy adviser of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said, "Homophobia and homophobic bullying remain a pervasive problem, not only within our schools and colleges but also in society in general."
"Schools and colleges can and must play an important role in promoting and supporting equality, but when schools are hard pressed to find time in the narrow curriculum and there is an over-emphasis on test results, teaching about equality, diversity and justice is usually the first casualty.
"ATL believes there should be a comprehensive root and branch approach to tackling homophobia and homophobic bullying. Central to this is identifying and addressing the cultural problem of heterosexism, accompanied by strong leadership in schools and colleges."
