ATL comment on Bercow Review findings
Tuesday, July 8 2008
Nansi Ellis, head of education policy at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said, "We are pleased staff working with the youngest children and their parents will be trained to make early identification of communication problems.
"Support and training for those who work with children and young people needs to continue in schools to prevent any children being left behind.
"However, schools cannot solve society’s problems and it is vital the Government recognises the important role of social and health agencies.
"In the past, health visitors and regular developmental check-ups played a critical role in the early identification of speech, language and communication needs.
"We agree with Bercow’s call to the Government to raise the profile of children with communication difficulties amongst local authorities and primary care trusts, who should play a key role in developing strategies to ensure early identification and intervention."
