Press Release
Adolescent into adulthood conference in Edinburgh
26 October 2005
The National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK's leading charity for people with autism and their families and carers, is holding a one-day conference on Thursday 10 November, at Edinburgh Marriott Hotel in Edinburgh. The conference will focus on the key challenges for people with autism as they approach adulthood and strategies to successfully manage the process.
The transition from school life to adulthood entails significant change for people with autism, their parents and carers and relevant professionals, such as those working in social services, further education and employers. This conference will highlight appropriate options, best practice examples and strategies to ensure that the transition is smooth.
Robert McKay, NAS National Co-ordinator Scotland will chair the conference, and speakers include: Michael McCreadie from the NAS Daldorch House School; John Cameron, Clinical Psychologist; Luke Beardon, Senior Lecturer in autism at Sheffield Hallam University; Robin Walker and Ruth Langford from the NAS Transitions to Adulthood Project.
Robert Mckay, NAS National Co-ordinator Scotland, said:
"It is critical that people with autism are given appropriate support from professionals throughout the process of transition into adulthood. It is therefore essential that professionals are aware of the range of options and strategies which will result in the most suitable outcome, be that in further education, employment or in a care setting. This conference will disseminate best practice that will give professionals a better understanding of the different options available."
The event is for teachers, support staff, social services, educational psychologists, other relevant professionals and parents and carers of individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome.
Delegate places are priced at £99 plus VAT for professionals and £47 plus VAT for parents/carers/individuals with autism. Further details and booking forms can be obtained through the NAS Conference and Events Department on 0115 911 3367 or by email: conference@nas.org.uk
