Fresh from his triumphant involvement in the freeing of 33 trapped miners, Chile's president Sebastian Pinera arrived in London over the weekend, his first stop in a European tour.

The visit, which will also include Germany and France, was planned some time ago.

Her Majesty the Queen extended a late invitation to the president after the dramatic rescue, which was a major news event worldwide.

The BBC reports that President Pinera has brought rock from the mine as gifts for the Queen and prime minister David Cameron.

The president will be at Westminster this afternoon, when he will address members of both houses of Parliament at a special joint meeting of the Latin American and Chile APPGs.

Next week another head of state will be in the Palace.

The Emir of Qatar will visit Parliament on Tuesday 26 October with a family delegation and will address MPs and peers in the Robing Room.
