Helen with Prime Minister Gordon Brown
Helen Jones was first elected as MP for Warrington North in May 1997. These are the promises she made when she was first elected and how they have been met…
TO BE A FULL TIME MP WITH A STAFFED OFFICE IN THE CONSTITUENCY PROVIDING SERVICES FOR LOCAL PEOPLE
Every working day since Helen’s election there has been a staffed office at Gilbert Wakefield House, Bewsey Street. That office has made it a priority to deal with local people’s problems, handling hundreds of enquiries every year.
TO LIVE IN THE CONSTITUENCY
Helen and her family live in the constituency. They use the same local shops, schools and hospitals as you do. Says Helen; “I know when I’m voting in Parliament that the decisions I make will affect me and my family in exactly the same way they affect you and your family because we use the same services.”
TO HOLD REGULAR ADVICE SURGERIES IN ALL LOCAL AREAS
Since her election, Helen has held surgeries twice a month, on a Friday at the Town Hall and on a Saturday in different venues in the constituency. She regularly goes out to meet constituents, holding a mobile surgery on average at least once a week, and has made herself accessible to at least 50, 000 constituents in this way. She also holds village surgeries six times a year.
TO SUPPORT LOCAL SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
Helen is a regular visitor to local schools and to Warrington Collegiate Institute. She has highlighted the good work done in Warrington North’s schools in Parliament and brought Government ministers to visit them. Helen has campaigned for more money for our schools. She has spoken in Parliament on teacher recruitment, the need for a simpler system of inspections and reducing class sizes as well as on the need for better school meals provision.
TO CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER HEALTH SERVICES FOR WARRINGTON NORTH
Helen has consistently argued for more money for health care in Warrington North and highlighted the need to tackle health problems in the constituency. Warrington Hospital has received an extra £750, 000 for its A&E unit and a further £5.5 million has been allocated to modernise and develop that service including providing separate services for children and better ambulance facilities. North Cheshire Health Authority received almost £1 million more in 2001/2002 than they did in the previous year.
Helen Jones has:
- helped people through regular advice surgeries - on average 58 per year.
- made herself available to over 50,000 local residents through regular mobile surgeries across the constituency- on average 35 per year.
- held village surgeries in rural areas
- regularly visited local community groups, residents’ associations and schools and supported many of their initiatives.
- campaigned for and delivered more money for education and our local health services.
- acted to prevent a third prison being built in Warrington.
- raised numerous Warrington North issues in Parliament.
