Constituency

Scunthorpe is a county constituency because the constituency includes a significant rural population.

It was formed from the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency following boundary changes in 1997. The constituency includes the whole of Scunthorpe, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham, Manton, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Redbourne, Hibaldstow, Cadney and the small communities within those parishes.

Scunthorpe is formed itself from the five villages of Crosby, Frodingham, Ashby, Brumby and Scunthorpe and grew rapidly following the discovery of ironstone just over 100 years ago. It is still one of Europe's and the UK's principle integrated iron and steel producers. It is the UK HQ for Corus constructional and engineering steels and also includes the Capro United Merchant Bar Mill. Following the steel closures of the 1980's Scunthorpe's economy has diversified into food production, electronics, distribution and specialist engineering and construction services. Steel and related services remain the largest employer followed by food production.

Scunthorpe has been described as an 'Industrial Island' surrounded as it is by rolling countryside, woods and agriculture. It is an area of low population density and an important arable area with major pig and poultry interests.

The local council is North Lincolnshire Unitary Authority.
