Biography

Personal History



Doug Naysmith was born 1 April 1941 in Musselburgh, Scotland.

He gained a BSc, then a PhD in Immunology, from the University of Edinburgh. He then did research at Yale University in the USA.
He has two children, Stephen (born in 1968) and Catherine (born 1973). He and his wife Caroline are separated.

Doug has worked as a technician in the civil service and as a research immunologist with a pharmaceutical company, before moving to Bristol University in 1972, where he was a Research Fellow and Lecturer in the Medical School until 1997.

Doug's interests outside politics include the cinema, paddle steamer preservation, theatre and music.

Political History



Doug has been a member of the Labour Party since 1966. He was a member of Bristol City Council for 18 years until 1998. He has been involved in the Co-operative movement and Party for many years.

Doug is a member of two select committees: Health and Regulatory Reform. He takes an active interest in health issues and, as well as being Joint-Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party Health Committee, is a member of many all party groups related to health matters.

Other political interests include ports and shipping, science, higher education and co-operative development. He is Chairman of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology.
