• 25th April 2006 - during Foreign Office questions I urged that whatever the obvious problems relating to Iran's potential nuclear capacity, there should be no unilateral action by any individual country; responsibility for dealing with the issue should lie exclusively with the UN Security Council. Moreover, I pointed out that the support that Britain and the United states in particular give to the previous regime made it that much easier for the fanatics to take power in 1979.

• 22nd November 2006 - during the Foreign Affairs debate on the Queen's Speech, I said that there should be a continued reduction in the number of British troops in Iraq, and moreover pointed out that public support for the on-going military operation was draining away. I did support the initial invasion since the UN weapons inspectors were not satisfied that the regime had in fact destroyed all WMDs. Moreover, the removal of Saddam's murderous tyranny would in itself be beneficial for Iraq. I had long been an opponent of his regime.
