Biography

David and Jeane Lepper have lived in Brighton for nearly 40 years.
Son, Joe - a journalist - and daughter, Eve - a nursery nurse - were born here and went to Balfour and Dorothy Stringer Schools.

David was a teacher in local State secondary schools for over 25 years.

David was a local councillor for 17 years, was the first ever Labour leader of Brighton Council and was Mayor of Brighton in 1993-94.

Successfully putting the case for Assisted Area Status to help bring new businesses and jobs for local people, getting Neighbourhood Renewal and Sure Start funding for the area, establishing the National Minimum Wage, reform of the unfair leasehold laws, tougher environmental protection and improving our town centres, affordable housing, a National Park for the South Downs and a stadium for Brighton and Hove Albion continue to be political priorities for David.

At Westminster David is a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee and of the Administration Committee which is involved in the running of the House of Commons.

He chairs cross-party groups on English Language Schools and on Foyers. He is Secretary of the Housing Co-ops Group.

A non-driver David is a public transport user.

David is an honorary life member of the League Against Cruel Sports and a life member of the Association of Town Centre Management.

David is a trustee of ARDIS - a Brighton charity working for those with Alzheimer's disease. He is a patron of Brighton and Hove Schools Rugby Association, Age Concern, Body Positive and Sussex Beacon. A fan of professional cycling, David helped bring the Tour de France to Brighton in 1994.
