Worle Post Office is saved - "a victory for local people" says Weston MP John Penrose
August 21 2009
MP for Weston-super-Mare John Penrose has just received confirmation from the Co-op that the Worle Post Office branch will be transferred to their new store, once they take it over from Somerfield.
When he heard about the possible closure, Mr Penrose, together with local councillors Roz Willis, Sue Creasey and Lisa Pilgrim, wrote to the Chief Executives of the Co-op and the Post Office to urge them to listen to worried local residents and keep the branch open.
After hearing the announcement, John Penrose said: "I'm absolutely delighted that our collective efforts have paid off and the Co-op have decided to listen to the wishes of local residents.
"If the Post Office had closed, customers would have been forced to use the nearest alternative branches which are almost a mile away. Weston-super-Mare has already lost six of its 27 post offices in the last couple of years and the loss of another one would have been disastrous for local residents, particularly for pensioners and people with no means of transport."
