Woking MP visits site of proposed development at Goldsworth Park Shops.

Woking’s local MP, Humfrey Malins, met with Councillor Shamas Tabrez in a visit to the under threat Goldsworth Park Shops and the site of the new planning proposal involving Waitrose Supermarket. Whilst handing out Woking Conservative Questionnaires asking about individual’s views on the matter, Humfrey encountered hundreds of concerned residents who voiced their objections to the proposed development.

Humfrey said “I’ve had many people writing to me and I understand the serious negative impact that such a development could have on the community at Goldsworth Park and it’s not just a case of local convenience. According to the Federation of Small Businesses 2,000 local shops are closing each year nationally. Despite their decline, there is little doubt as to the value of these shops. Over 50 per cent of turnover from independent retailers goes back into the local community, compared to an average of just 5 per cent from supermarkets.”

“It’s for these reasons that I, along with my Conservative Councillors, will do all that I can to protect this vital heart of the community.”
