Tories And Liberal Democrats Oppose Moves To Make Voting Easier

Joe Benton MP has condemned yesterday’s attempt by the House of Lords to block plans to make voting in the Bootle Constituency easier for everyone in the forthcoming European and Local elections.

Plans for the proposed all-postal ballot will now have to go back to the House of Commons amid fears that there may not now be enough parliamentary time left in which to pass the necessary legislation.

Speaking after hearing the plans had been blocked by The House of Lords, Joe Benton MP said:

“It is outrageous that an unelected bunch of Tories and Liberal Democrats should be trying to block proposals to make it easier for local people to vote in these elections. It is unacceptable for the unelected to be telling the electorate how to vote.

“Experience from Salford and Trafford shows us that postal voting increases the turnout in elections, we need to do all we can to encourage people to participate in local democracy.”

“By attempting to block these measures the Tories and Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords are showing their true anti-democratic colours.

Joe Benton continued:

“The Tories and Liberal Democrats in the Bootle Constituency should now explain to us all why they oppose making voting easier, why they are afraid of increased voter participation and why they are making it more difficult for pensioners, the frail and working people to vote.
