Success for Weston MP's campaign as permanent HGV Ban becomes reality

    7 July 2009

Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose was celebrating today following the announcement that North Somerset Council is expecting to make the experimental weight restrictions on long-distance heavy Lorries on the A368 permanent.

The local MP has been calling for North Somerset to make the restrictions permanent following the latest set of data showing that the temporary ban has succeeded in substantially reducing the number of long-distance HGV's using local roads. Mr Penrose welcomed the trial of the weight limit in July last year, having campaigned for it since 2003.

John said: "Traffic problems in Banwell and our other local villages have been getting steadily worse for years. Lorries have been driving down country lanes that were simply never designed for them and it only takes one HGV in Banwell's narrows to back the traffic up, creating enormous queues in both directions. "

"I'm delighted that North Somerset is making these restrictions permanent. There's been a dramatic decrease in the number of HGV's using our roads because of the temporary ban. Of course, they won't solve all of our traffic problems, but they're definitely an important step in the right direction."
