    Stop the Slaughter in Gaza

    7th January 2009

Sparkbrook and Small Heath MP, Roger Godsiff, was one of a number of MP’s to sign a statement drafted by fellow Birmingham MP, Richard Burden, condemning the continuation of Israel’s massive military strikes on Gaza and the rising humanitarian cost of the assault.

Mr Godsiff, who has also signed a number of Early Day Motions on the matter believes that there must be an urgent and immediate ceasefire geared to effective delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and a reinvigorated political process.

    He went on to say:

“Whilst I welcome our Government’s pledge of emergency aid worth £7 m ($10m) to provide urgently-needed food and fuel to the Palestinian territory I shall be tabling an Written Parliamentary Question (WPQ) when Parliament resumes to find out what funds we are prepared to commit in the medium to long term. Any pledges of aid are worthless at the moment without a cessation of bombing from the air and rocket attacks launched from inside Gaza.

Roger Godsiff has also added his name to a letter to be sent to Foreign Secretary, David Milliband MP, on behalf of a new organisation called Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East.

The letter fully supports the call by the Foreign Secretary for a cessation of violence and asks him to make a statement as soon as Parliament resumes. The group is also calling for an urgent debate on Gaza.
