    MP leads in battle against climate change and asks why Warrington Borough Council are not signedd up

    Warrington North MP HELEN JONES today announced an action plan that will reduce her own carbon footprint and that of Warrington North as a whole. The MP said she would offset personal travel, promote the Energy Savings Trust’s ‘ten things we all can do’ initiative, and contact schools, businesses and trade unions to encourage them to do their bit.

    The MP is also asking Warrington Borough Council why they do not appear on the list of those signed up to the Nottingham Declaration. The declaration, signed by over 160 local authorities, pledges them to actively tackle climate change in their area and to work with others to reduce emissions nationwide.

    HELEN JONES said :

    “ The government has been leading on this important issue but we all must do more if we want to tackle climate change. That is why I announced today that I will :

    • be promoting the Carbon Savings Trust’s ten tips to tackle climate change;
    • be writing to every school in the constituency offering them a letter for each pupil encouraging parents to switch to energy efficient light bulbs. A low-energy bulb can save over £100 on electricity during its life and if one million homes changed three light bulbs it would be the equivalent of taking 100,000 cars off our roads;

    • be working with trade unions to promote greener workplaces;

    • be writing to business leaders urging them to take steps to reduce their carbon emissions;

    • be signing up to a scheme which will help me to offset my carbon emissions.
    •
    “ I was surprised to see that Warrington Borough Council does not appear on the list of authorities which have signed the Nottingham Declaration. I will be asking the LibDem/Tory leadership why they have not done so and what progress they are making in reducing borough emissions.
    “ I hope that constituents, businesses and indeed the borough council will join my green campaign. The debate about science is over. We all have to do our bit. Together we can work to tackle climate change and reduce our carbon emissions. “
