MP disappointed by closure of training club in Matlock
9 March 2009
West Derbyshire MP Patrick McLoughlin is disappointed over the University of Derby's decision to close the Computer Training Club on Firs Parade in Matlock.
Patrick commented,
"Having received complaints about this decision, I contacted the University's Vice-Chancellor to ask about this matter. In his reply, he confirmed that the decision had been taken to close the centre because they were unable to provide sufficient funding.
"This is obviously very disappointing and it will be a huge blow to the area and to a large number of people who have benefited from this valuable local facility. In the current economic climate, with people losing their jobs and looking for ways to re-train, it would seem sensible to keep places like this open, rather than close them.
"The decision to shut the club will also be a further significant blow to the town of Matlock, where sadly over the past few months a number of other local businesses have closed and shops are empty. I am urging the Government to help find alternative sources of funding for training in the area."
Patrick is visiting the centre at 10 am on Friday 13 March
