MP campaigns with All Party Parliamentary Osteoporosis Group and National Osteoporosis Society
16th July 2010
Sandra Osborne, MP for Ayr Carrick and Cumnock constituency, has joined the All Party Parliamentary Osteoporosis Group which aims to spearhead efforts to improve services for people who have suffered painful and disabling fractures, and attended the Group's AGM on 7 July. She met with representatives of the National Osteoporosis Society including Professor David Reid, Chair of the Society (see attached photograph).
The National Osteoporosis Society has been working closely with the All Party Group with the aim of linking a Fracture Liaison Service to every hospital that receives fragility fractures in the UK. These services ensure that every fracture patient gets the treatment and care they need to avoid further painful and debilitating fractures.
"Much can be done to prevent unnecessary fractures" said Professor David Reid, chair of the National Osteoporosis Society. "Fracture rates can be halved by the timely identification of osteoporosis and the consequent prescription of treatment to increase bone strength. These services can significantly reduce the impact of osteoporosis and fractures. This isn't an empty call to action; we know that these measures work. They can improve quality of life, restore independence and help to save thousands of lives each year."
Sandra Osborne said:
'I am happy to join the All Party Parliamentary Osteoporosis Group which aims to highlight issues affecting osteoporosis sufferers and to campaign for appropriate diagnosis, care and treatments.'
