    Malins visits Woking's small businesses

    9th December 2008

Humfrey Malins has met with the Secretary of the Woking Federation of Small Businesses along with Councillor Simon Bellord and Councillor Beryl Marlow in order to support the good work of the FSB and have a walk around Woking to see the ways in which the current financial crisis is affecting small businesses in the area.

Amongst others he visited the Singer Sowing Centre on Chertsey Road, a Café on Church Road East and Terry’s Store, also on Church Road East (pictured with Mr Patel). Mr Patel reported that far fewer people had been coming into the shop in recent weeks, he and his fellow shop workers had noticed a big difference due to recent office closures in Woking.

Humfrey said “Everyone I have met today has reported a downturn, everyone has noticed the impact of the recession. Some have suggested that parking might be an issue in Woking and that is something I take seriously. What is crystal clear is that the 2.5% VAT reduction is not thought to be any help to these small businesses, who are having to deal with the administration of this. The Government needs to do more to help small businesses such as these that are the very lifeblood of local communities.”
