Kingsway Residents Get Mps Support To Take Over Management Of Land And Ancient Orchard
Coventry North East MP, Bob Ainsworth recently met with a number of residents from Kingsway in his constituency to discuss the maintenance of the land between their properties and the North South Road.
This land contains an ancient orchard reputed to contain the original Wyken Pippin apple.
The residents do not believe that the land is currently being properly looked after and they say this is because the Council are not maintaining the area as they promised they would following the construction of the North South Road.
The residents are now interested in organising a scheme to take over the maintenance of the land and Bob Ainsworth has written to Coventry City Council to see if they are prepared to give them permission to do so. He is also making enquiries about what happened to cuttings taken from the Wyken Pippin trees to see if they still exist.
Bob Ainsworth said
“This land is not used by anyone but has an interesting history. If left neglected anything it may contain of value will be lost.
“If we have residents with the enthusiasm to involve themselves in a preservation scheme I hope the Council will find ways of accommodating them and helping them”.
