John Baron MP presses Government over 'cheapest tariff' information

Minister says MP's proposal is being given consideration

Today in Energy Questions in the House of Commons, John Baron MP quizzed Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O'Brien MP as to the dilemma faced by consumers because of the many different tariffs that exist and the need for simple and relevant information on domestic bills.

John said:

"The consumer organisation Which? has calculated that there are over 4,000 different tariffs. This can be very confusing as evidenced by the fact that many consumers switch to a more expensive tariff. My Bill obliges energy companies to make it clear on bills whether the consumer is on their cheapest possible tariff – an idea welcomed by the Secretary of State. What is the Government now doing to address this issue?"

The Government said it was a very important issue and is considering John's idea.

John said afterwards:

"Too many consumers are paying too much for their energy, particularly vulnerable people who don't know how to switch. This is an idea whose time has come."
