Ideas to tackle Recession- Graham Allen MP
8th January 2009
Graham Allen, Labour MP for Nottingham North said today: ”I welcome the cabinet meeting in the communities we serve and I hope they will go one step further and listen to communities other than Whitehall about the way forward out of a recession.”
“Our massively over-centralised governmental system means that often no ideas other than those that emerge from Number 10 or Whitehall are seen to have any validity. I would hope that the Prime Minister would seek to lead an effort to encourage all communities to feed in ideas and create a proper structure to sift and discuss them and recognise and reward those cities, neighbourhoods and individuals who come up with thoughtful and helpful proposals and how to move forward out of recession.”
“The most obvious area is those projects under consideration for bringing forward public spending. Whilst we can all rehash the New Deal 1930s list, there are many bright and intelligent suggestions that could be distilled into a very creative long-term programme to regenerate Britain’s economy.”
“I hope very much that learning from the example of holding cabinet meetings outside of London that we will take this further by collating the BEST OF BRITISH IDEAS, to supersede currently being produced by Whitehall”.
