Good News for Weston
20 April 2009
In any job you get good days and bad days. I’ve just had a good week.
It started with the news that, after a lot of complaints from me and many other local residents about First’s plans to cut our bus services, a deal has been done to save them. In the end it was the Council that came up trumps, bringing in some new bus companies to run some of the services and finding a little extra money to save the rest. Full marks to North Somerset Council (now there’s a phrase you seldom hear) for fixing it so quickly. If they hadn’t, anyone without a car in Hutton, Churchill and Langford, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, would have been cut off.
And then the sun shone on Weston over Easter. The seafront was packed. Local businesses were doing a roaring trade, and I went on the newly-erected Wheel with my family. It was marvellous. There was a bit of a queue, but it wasn’t too bad. The staff were friendly and helpful. And the view from the top was magnificent. You could see all the way across to Wales and down to the North Devon coast. The Millenium Stadium in Cardiff was crystal clear, and Steep Holm looked no further away than the tip of Brean Down.
There was only one problem. The view from the top was so good, my children could see every single ride and concession on Weston beach. And, once they’d seen them, they wanted a go on all of them. Without exception. It took hours to get away, and we spent far more money than we’d expected. I’m not sure anyone realised the Wheel would be such a great way to advertise the other attractions on Weston beach, but it’s going to be a goldmine.
