    Doug’s Christmas Message

Doug Naysmith MP’s Letter from Westminster for the Observer, North Bristol and South Gloucestershire Editions

You may not have heard of Kevan Jones, the Labour MP for Durham North, but shop-workers in the know may raise a glass to him this Christmas. Earlier this year, Kevan sponsored the Christmas Day (Trading) Bill which makes large stores close on Christmas Day. This gives most shop workers at least one day off at Christmas to spend time with their families– little enough, you might think, but more than some received in the past when large stores could open on Christmas Day unless it fell on a Sunday.

I backed the Bill from the beginning and was delighted when it became law. After all, even Scrooge closed on Christmas Day and staff in large retail stores work exceptionally long hours in the run-up to Christmas. Then they have to get things ready for the Boxing Day Sales! At least now they will have Christmas Day off, which is important for everyone, but especially for people with children.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the groups and individuals who have sent me cards and invited me to concerts, carol services, and other festive gatherings. Thanks too to Bank Leaze Primary School for contributing so many excellent drawings in my Christmas Card Competition. Happy Christmas to you all.
