David Amess MP pledges support for better services for cancer survivors

    20 May 2009

David Amess MP is pledging his support to the two million cancer survivors living in the UK. The Member of Parliament for Southend West showed his support for the campaign for better cancer services at a House of Commons reception hosted by Macmillan Cancer Support on 6th May 2009.

The cancer charity is looking to raise awareness of the difficulties cancer patients face in getting their lives back on track after a life-threatening disease. Many cancer survivors experience emotional problems and side effects such as severe fatigue or memory loss, as well as finding it hard to get back to work, pay the bills or start a family.

David Amess MP said: "There are two million people in the UK who have had a cancer diagnosis, thousands of them living in Southend; they will live with the disease or the consequences of their treatment for the rest of their lives. Cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence but it shouldn't be a life sentence either."

"That's why health and social care services need to start doing more to support this growing population and why I'm backing Macmillan's campaign to help the two million cancer survivors in the UK get their lives back."
