    Currie & Balerno News 350

    1 October 2009

Despite the dreadful weather, this year's exhibits at the Currie Horticultural Society Annual Show were first class and showed what hard work – and in some cases good luck – can achieve.

Especially noteworthy was the fact that there were a number of very good entries from young people and children in particular. I suppose to many people gardening and making entries into a horticultural show is something for older people. To a large extent that's right. But growing things – and you don't need much space to do it – can be fun as well as educational for all ages.

And it's not just growing flowers and vegetables but bakery and artwork – the exhibits on show just showed what a wide range of talent there is in Bonaly, Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno.

I am sure if anyone young or old wants to enter the competition next year the Society would be only too happy to help and to offer whatever encouragement it can. I certainly enjoyed the afternoon and so did many others.

It's also good to see that the monthly Farmer's Market continues to flourish. It all adds to the many activities in the area widely supported thanks to the efforts of some very dedicated people. This month was the first time that the Market has been run locally. It deserves our continued support.

I am also glad to see that the Balerno Music Festival, fresh from its success last year, is due to take place again this October. With any luck this will become a permanent fixture and hopefully will be sell-out.
