    Currie and Balerno News 347

    1 June 2009

Yes, it rained - I suppose you can't expect anything else in a May Saturday in Edinburgh. But this year's Currie Fair was a big success and a huge tribute to the Community Council and everyone who was involved in putting it on. The enthusiasm of the stall holders defied the weather. What was really impressive was the sheer scale of activities represented. From play groups to horticultural. Groups supporting families, the Rotary and RAF. Each one of the groups was firmly routed in the area and again demonstrates the commitment and the sheer hard work of many many people not just for one weekend but throughout the whole year. And time and time again I met people who emphasised the importance of building community life which is so much a feature of this area.

And the Currie Fair built on the success of the Annual Riding of the Marches. The weather was much better the previous weekend and attracted a record number of participants from all over the country but there was very good local representation too including the children from local primary schools who contributed to the ceremony. It was a great pleasure to present their awards and congratulate them on some very imaginative and thoughtful contributions.

Both events and indeed Balerno Fair later in the month and other events show just how much commitment and dedication there is which makes the area what it is.

I'm sure that everyone involved would like to see even more volunteers and even more people joining in their activities so if you didn't manage to get to the Fair and you want to know what is going on, then the answer is a great deal.

Last years Balerno Fair took place on what was probably the hottest day of the year, I recall. Perhaps this year………… lets hope so !
