Currie and Balerno News 346
1 May 2009
Currie Rugby Club is a popular and successful local club which the area is fortunate to have.
Their success in attracting around 350 boys and girls week in and out to train and play is particularly impressive especially when there are so many other competing interests for young people!
However the condition of the Club's playing and training pitches as well as the changing facilities poses a real threat to this success.
I recently met with some of the Club's representatives to look at the facilities first hand and discuss the issues they face. We talked about the challenges of getting the ground to dry out and grass to re-grow following wet and wintery weather especially given the position of the pitches, the limited ground maintenance provided and their reliance on volunteers to collect strewn rubbish and the demand from women to play but having insufficient changing facilities.
I've already been pursuing the matter with the Council over the last year. The Council agree the Currie and Balerno area should have better sporting facilities and support so it is disappointing that this has not in resulted in a commitment of funds. I will continue to pursue the Council as well as contacting other organisations to see what help is available.
I want to do all I can to help the Rugby Club get the investment that's needed so the community can continue to benefit from the health and social aspects the sport provides.
