Coventry Observer Article - October 2005
Dear Constituent,
This month I welcomed the launch of the Children’s Food Bill in the House of Commons, and I look forward to the continuation of its Second Reading early next year.
I also welcome the Governments White Paper on Education, which I believe extends the opportunity of “choice” to all children. The Paper sets out how the Government plans to raise standard in all schools but make sure that every pupil has the education they deserve, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
This month I have also leant support to the campaign against hyperthermia amongst elderly people who lack adequate heating.
I have written to Ministers regarding Women’s Pension Rights, particularly those women who are placed by agencies in employment but are denied pension rights, holiday pay etc.
On October 11, 2005 I hosted the HTI Trust Reception at the House of Commons. HTI is a non profit organisation that provides support to schools to develop a future skilled and global workforce, through their international placement schemes for head teachers.
As Chair of the West Midlands Parliamentary Labour Party, I and other West Midlands MP’s met the Fire Brigade Union and the TUC to discuss future changes to the Fire Services.
Bob Ainsworth MP and I also had an opportunity this month to meet with Mark Hysom, from the Learning and Skills Council regarding national issues that face the Council.
Best Wishes, Jim.
