    Coventry Observer

This month I met with the West Midlands Fire Chief, Mr. Frank Sheehan, to discuss my concerns about the proposed changes to cover support for Coventry, represented by 1 fire engine within 10 miles between the hours of 12 midnight and 8am.

Also this month I proposed Parliamentary Questions to the Minister of State for Citizenship, Immigration and Nationality at the Home Office, Des Browne MP. I asked the Minister, what plans his Department had to combat the production of counterfeit identity cards in the event of their introduction.

The Secretary of State responded that “the Identity Cards Bill included a Clause 27, which covered new offences relating to making or proposing false identity documents such as UK and foreign, identity cards, passports and driving licenses. Where it is proved that a person has intent to use these documents, a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment would apply. Where there is no intent, but the accused has no reasonable excuse for having such documentation in his possession, a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment will apply.”

I was also delighted to be asked to attend the opening of the new ASDA store in Abbey Park on Monday 17 January 2005. It is a welcome fact that the opening of this store has resulted in a 100 new job opportunities being made available.

I also attended the Holocaust Memorial Day in Coventry on Thursday 27 January 2005, to pay tribute to the immense sacrifices made during World War 2.

It is important that we remember the significance of the Holocaust, and consciously strive to challenge intolerance and racism every day.

    Best Wishes, Jim.
