Connaught Road post office
Dear Mr Partington
I have been forwarded a copy of your email to my constituent Mrs Shirley Kerr by her. I am afraid that its contents do not reassure me that there is a genuine consultation in progress because no one who had made a proper study of the area, its topography, the access routes and general commercial and social lines of movement in Market Harborough and Great Bowden could ever conclude that Great Bowden village shop sub-post office is an adequate substitute for Connaught Road post office. I do urge you to go there personally and see for yourself the various roads, parking facilities, amount of post office custom, transport facilities and other factors that stare you in the face and which make the proposal to close Connaught Road so utterly incomprehensible to my constituents and to me.
I am happy to take you to St Mary’s Place, Connaught Road and Great Bowden post offices at a mutually convenient time so that I can explain to you how the proposals you have for Market Harborough seem to have no understanding of life as it is lived and worked in this growing community. Far from enhancing the reputation of the Post Office these proposals and your reliance on the matters set out in your letter to Mrs Kerr will make it look and sound ridiculous.
In view of the intense local interest in this issue I am releasing this correspondence to the local media.
Yours sincerely
Edward Garnier QC MP
