'Claim What Is Yours' Says Terry Rooney MP

Labour's Terry Rooney encourages local pensioners to take up fuel payments

Terry Rooney MP today urged Bradford North pensioners to make sure they are claiming the increased Winter Fuel Payments that Labour introduced to help cover the cost of heating bills.

14780 pensioners in Bradford North received the Winter Fuel Payment last year. Pensioners have until 23rd September to claim to ensure their Winter Fuel Payment is made before Christmas.

    Terry Rooney MP, said:

"Pensioners in Bradford who have worked hard all their lives deserve every penny they get. I'm calling on our older residents in Bradford to claim what they are entitled to.

"Winter Fuel Payments will mean households in Bradford with someone over 60 will receive £200, households with those over 80 will receive £300. This will be a real help over the winter months.

"To find out more about what you, your friend, relative or neighbour are entitled to call the Winter Fuel Helpline: 0845 9 15 15 15.

"Claims need to be made before 23rd September for payments before Christmas."

    Terry Rooney added,

"In contrast to Labour's record of increased support to pensioners, the Conservatives and Liberals opposed Labour's Winter Fuel Payment.

"Local pensioners can save hundreds of pounds, not only this year, but every year."

Pensions Minister Stephen Timms MP said,

"This winter about eight million households will benefit from the £200 Winter Fuel Payment. Around two million people in those households with someone aged 80 and over will receive an extra payment of up to £100, receiving a total Winter Fuel Payment of £300.

"Paid alongside the Winter Fuel Payment this year, many households with someone aged 65 or over could also receive the Age-Related Payment of £200 to help with council tax bills. These are all non means-tested, tax-free lump sum payments."
