    Calor Leak facts emerge

    28 April 2009

MP Dr Bob Spink is taking a delegation (see below) to the Minister, Lord McKenzie, to press for answers and better safety on the Calor Gas operations on Canvey Island.

Following the leak of 163 tonnes of liquefied propane gas at the Canvey site on October 27th last year a number of serious questions arise.

    Bob says:

"I am indebted to George Whatley and all in Pam (People Against Methane) and have been working closely with them, Dave Blackwell and other Councillors to keep Canvey Island safe for residents.

We will be demanding a new full major accident and risk assessment and we have serious concerns about the response to the October leaks which were potentially life threatening.

Both Calor and the HSE must explain why there was not more, and more timely, public information about these leaks and the risks they posed for residents and schools. We need to review the Public Information Zone policy, why the council has allowed house to be built so near to the site.

The question arises whether this Calor site is safe to continue its current operations. If the 163 tonnes of liquid propane had ignited, the consequences are unthinkable."
