Unite's reaction to the McNulty review

19 May 2011

Unite national officer Bob Rixham said: "The privatisation of the railways was disastrous. It is the prime reason why train fares in the UK are some of the highest in Europe. The McNulty review seems to be working on the same premise which led to the situation we are currently in.

"Rather than looking at ways of unifying the rail network the report seems to be recommending further fragmentation.

"The report proposes significant cuts in train, ticket office and maintenance workers which Unite will fiercely oppose. Again we have a Tory-led administration seeking to target ordinary workers when responsibility for sky-high train fares lies firmly with the private companies seeking to make as much profit as possible."
