Unite warning over police staff cuts

21 July 2011

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary warns 34,000 police jobs will be lost as part of government cuts.

Unite's national officer, Peter Allenson, said:

"It's blindingly obvious that you cannot lose this number of jobs and maintain crime reduction levels.

"Unite has warned that deep cuts to police staff jobs, pay and conditions will devastate morale and put a strain on the force, as more police will have to back fill the roles previously done by police staff.

"In reality, even more police will be lost than this report suggests as many will be doing the work of police staff which is crucial to protecting the public.

Unite the union is one of the four independent trade unions recognised for collective bargaining for police staff (civilian staff).
