Unite reaction to over 700 Royal Bank of Scotland job losses

Unite the union has said it is appalled at the news today that Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is to close a key centre and cutting additional jobs resulting in over 700 job losses.

The decision to shut a major centre in Telford will result in the loss of in excess of 500 jobs. The closure of this centre which deals with debt management and fraud operations will be a significant loss to the local economy. The other location which will lose around 150 roles is Plymouth where very few jobs will remain at the site. 40 jobs are being lost from Leeds, this is in addition to hundreds already lost from Leeds and Harrogate RBS sites.

Dave Fleming, Unite national officer said: “The job losses announcements and site closures announced today by the Royal Bank of Scotland are truly devastating news for the local communities, many of which depend on these finance jobs.

“When RBS announced 3,500 job cuts in September 2010 there was utter disbelief about the scale of the cuts, today we are seeing the human tragedy which this decision will result in. We must remember that behind each and every job loss there is a family tragedy and the consequences are often devastating.

“Unite is calling on the bank to do more to offer re-training and redeployment for the workforce, who will today be distraught by this news.”
