Unite reaction to 500 Barclays job cuts and disastrous week for sector

26 May 2011

David Fleming, Unite national officer, said: "The news today that Barclays is to cut 500 staff marks this as a disastrous week for the UK's financial services sector where nearly 1,400 staff have been cut. The sector is haemorrhaging jobs, this week alone workers have lost their jobs from across Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland and today Barclays.

"Every day this week massive groups of staff in processing centres, bank branches and call centres, across the country have been told that their futures are uncertain. What does this do for the chances of economic recovery?

"These workers are paying the price for the financial risks taken by those rich and greedy bankers at the top of the finance sector."
