UK Youth Parliament promote 'hope, optimism and passion'

25 March 2011

UK Youth Parliament through local authorities across the country engaged over a million young people in recent years in the democratic process. We exist to ensure that democracy is a tool that is accessible to young people and that they know how to use it in the future. Young people from across the country, on their terms alone, come together to discuss issues that matter to them and seek to ensure that adults listen.

At times when most major issues and decisions being made by the government – locally and nationally – impact upon the life chances of future generations, it is now more important than ever before that young people have a seat at the table.

MPs voted overwhelmingly in support of the UK Youth Parliament and invited us to use the House of Commons chamber once a year for the lifetime of this Parliament. Putting elected Members of Youth Parliament onto the green benches sends out a powerful message that actually young people can make a difference. The government's announcement yesterday helps secure the future of the UK Youth Parliament and I for one welcome that.

Hope, optimism and passion for change are values that inspire young people to get involved. Cynical remarks based on a lack of real understanding do no justice to what UK Youth Parliament has achieved for children and young people across the country over the last decade.
