UK Youth Parliament confirms new Parliamentary Trustees
11 February 2011
UKYP's Board of Trustees has confirmed the appointment of two new Parliamentary Trustees who join the Board of Democracy for Young People, UKYP's governing body.
Conservative MP for Cannock Chase Aidan Burley and Labour MP for Gedling, Vernon Coaker, will join Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire, Jo Swinson, to complete the representation of the major parties represented in Westminster on the charity's Board.
As well as acting as Trustees with the accompanying responsibilities, Parliamentary Trustees by convention help facilitate UKYP's relationship with Parliament itself - including welcoming MYPs to Parliament each year when they take over the House of Commons chamber for the day.
Aidan Burley MP replaces Charles Hendry MP who was the longest serving Parliamentary Trustee having succeeded the late Andrew Rowe, UKYP's founding father and Patron. Charles stood down in May having been appointed Minister of State for Energy.
Vernon Coaker succeeds Parmjit Dhanda who lost his seat at the General Election. Vernon was formerly a trustee from 2002-2006 and served as Co-Chair of the Board. He also stood down after becoming a Minister in the previous Government.
Jo Swinson MP was appointed last year to succeed Lynne Featherstone MP who was appointed a Home Office Minister in the incoming Coalition Government.
It is hoped that Aidan, Jo and Vernon will meeting with the House authorities soon to discuss the development of UKYP’s relationship with the Commons.
