UK cement industry exceeds sector plan environmental performance targets

"The UK cement industry's environmental performance continues to exceed the sector plan targets it has agreed with the Environment Agency" said Dr Pal Chana, Executive Director of the Mineral Products Association.

This is the sixth year that the cement industry has reported against its sector plan performance targets and once again the results show strong progress in all of the key areas. Compared to 2008, which itself saw the industry meet and exceed eleven out of fifteen of its 2010 targets, the industry once again clocked up an impressive performance:

Use of substitute raw materials increased by 19%
Substitute fuels now represent 35% of all kiln fuels burned
Dust emissions per tonne of cement were down by 31%
NOx emissions per tonne of cement fell by 25%
SO2 emissions per tonne of cement reduced by 39%, and
CO2 emissions per tonne of cement were down by 6%

"Against the backdrop of an investment-constrained economic environment, the industry continues to put environmental control and emissions reductions at the heart of its operations" added Dr Chana. "While the country depends on mineral products including cement for its homes, schools, hospitals, roads, railways and much more, the cement industry continues to meet demand through domestic manufacturing; by far the most environmentally responsible way to meet the UK's needs for this critical product."
