Press Release

The responsibility deal

15 March 2011

The Responsibility Deal aims to tackle a number of the key challenges to public health through partnership working and voluntary agreements between the Government, business and the voluntary sector.

The Deal consists of a series of pledges through which partners commit to take actions to improve public health.

The Responsibility Deal has involved five networks covering different policy areas including Alcohol, Behaviour Change, Food, Health at Work, and Physical Activity. We've been involved in the work of all of these except the Alcohol network.

We've decided we're not going to sign up to the Responsibility Deal just yet but may do in the future.

Our chief executive Peter Hollins said:“We welcome the emphasis this Government is placing on public health and the personal commitment shown by Andrew Lansley. He has stood firm against the tobacco industry by announcing the ban on cigarette vending machines and tobacco displays.

"History shows us public health benefits normally result from timely, evidence-based legislation.

"We became involved in the Responsibility Deal networks to progress our shared commitment to promoting public health and tackling health inequalities. We hope to be able to sign up to the deal once further progress is made developing a robust monitoring system for the pledges. There also needs to be more clarity about the timetable for reviewing progress and taking regulatory action if results aren't achieved.

"In the meantime we'll continue to be supportive of the Government's strong focus on public health and engage constructively to strengthen the Responsibility Deal in any way we can."
