The NASUWT comments on Sinn Fein manifesto
28 April 2010
Commenting on the proposals for education in the Sinn Fein manifesto, Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:
"Protecting public services from cuts to public spending must remain a top priority for the people of Northern Ireland. Public services are essential to rebuilding the country after the recession.
"The NASUWT believes that a clear commitment is needed from Sinn Fein to protect funding for schools in the future.
"We note Sinn Fein's pledge to continue investment in the school estate which is critically important to maintaining high educational standards.
"However, equal attention must also be given to ensuring justice for teachers in Northern Ireland.
"Parity of pay and conditions with teachers in England and Wales is the next critically important step needed to achieve a fair deal for teachers and to secure the best educational outcomes for all pupils in Northern Ireland's schools.
"The NASUWT looks to all the political parties to secure the establishment of a social partnership between the Northern Ireland Assembly (NIA), Education and Skills Authority (ESA) and the NASUWT and other school workforce unions. This would provide a firm basis for raising standards through tackling workload and improving the conditions of service of teachers to enable them to work effectively."
