The class of 2011: A new deal for post-14 students
26 April 2011
Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said;
“Let us be clear, to do nothing about youth unemployment will be catastrophic not only for the generations of young people and their families that it will directly affect but also for society as a whole.
“Cutting grants such as the Education Maintenance Allowance and the raising of tuition fees simply alienates less advantaged young people and stops them from viewing continuing in education as an option.
“To keep all young people motivated we need a fully comprehensive education system which provides a good local school for every child, affordable higher and further education and a curriculum that is engaging, challenging and relevant.
“The cost of youth unemployment is not just measured in money. We cannot cut vital support to students and expect there to be no consequences. Education cuts have major social and economic costs. Children excluded from school or who leave school with poor skills cost the economy in lost earnings, lower tax receipts, higher crime rates and increased benefit payments.
