Teacher performance management

Commenting on the consultation document released today by the Department for Education about performance management arrangements and capability procedures for teachers, Christine Blower, General Sectary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said;
“All teachers want to be as successful as possible in improving the life chances of their pupils, and want their performance to be managed in a way which encourages continuing improvements in professional practice.
“Procedures to deal with any concerns about performance must be fair, and not offer a bully's charter. Many teachers already feel overburdened and under-supported in school.
“The Government should be focussing on ways of allowing their professional expertise to flourish, not undermining them by encouraging more overbearing oversight by management. Where illness affects teaching, employers should be considering how to overcome the difficulties, not how to remove the teacher.
“These proposals are about removing protections, not about cutting down on unnecessary red tape.”
