Press Release
Stand up for local jobs and together with communities
4 May 2011
This weekend (Saturday) saw about 200 locals from Stoke-on-Trent and neighbouring communities standing up for local jobs in opposition to Royal Mail's review of the future of its customer service call centre in Stoke-on-Trent. Organised by the CWU, marchers were joined by members of other trade unions as well as local MPs Joan Walley and Rob Flello.
In recent times the loss of valuable industry in the region has seen jobs become scarce. Coupled with the con-dem government's agenda of cuts and with unemployment figures in the UK at their highest since the mid-90s, the outlook for those workers employed in the call centre is dire. Communities also stand to lose as the knock-on effect of a closure will have a lasting negative impact on the local economy.
Royal Mail has already transferred 700 jobs out of the region after closing sorting offices in Stoke and Crewe in the past 18 months. With 400 more jobs at stake local MP Joan Walley said: "I'm marching to send a strong message to Royal Mail. We have lost so many jobs in Stoke-on-Trent, including when Royal Mail moved some of its operations to Wolverhampton. This is an area which cannot afford any more job losses."
CWU rep Paul Malyan agreed, saying: "This is a community march because the fight is about the community, it's their jobs."
