Smaller organisations must not be forgotten in bid to boost employment, says MEND
10 January 2011
Harry MacMillan, Chief Executive of MEND, a social enterprise that is currently working with the DWP to get 250 NEETs into work, comments on David Cameron's announcement on unemployment.
He says: "The commitment of big-business to improve our nation's unemployment rate is admirable. However, with the need to off-set public sector job cuts we must not overlook the value of small to medium sized businesses in our quest to boost employment rates.
“The 50,000 jobs announced today by some of the UK’s largest companies, highlights the need for small to medium sized businesses to be involved in the government’s employment drive. Today’s announcement shows that if we are to meet our nation’s employment aspirations, job creation is not just for the big companies, but should driven by the whole economy.
“As a medium-sized social enterprise MEND is currently working in partnership with leading leisure companies to support 250 young unemployed people into work, giving them valuable work experience and career enhancing qualifications. Through properly supported innovative partnerships such as these, smaller organisations can make a real and lasting difference to our employment rates and ultimately our economy."
