      Severn Trent Water gets theatrical

      11 February 2010

Pupils across Leicestershire will be taking part in a series of 'Play in a Day' workshops this month, in a joint initiative between Severn Trent Water and the Konflux Theatre in Education group to educate school pupils about water efficiency.

Severn Trent Water and the Konflux Theatre group will be visiting eight schools across Leicestershire during February; with the key aim of engaging Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils (aged 11-14 years old) in a fun and exciting way to educate them about the importance of saving water.

In groups of up to thirty pupils, the Konflux group will set about teaching pupils about water efficiency and sewer flooding, by devising and acting out a play. This will then be performed at the end of the school day to fellow pupils and parents.

Edwina Woodland, Education Coordinator at Severn Trent Water said today "Severn Trent has been looking at new ways of interacting with school pupils and educating them about the need to be more water efficient. The Konflux Theatre group have a great reputation and really know how to grab the pupils' attention and make learning fun. We hope that by taking part in the Play in a Day the pupils will go away with a better understanding of the need to be water efficient, as well knowing a few key ways that they can do their bit and reduce the amount of water they use; such as taking baths instead of showers, which can save up to 50 litres of water."

Rebecca Freeman from the Konflux Theatre in Education group said "Konflux Theatre has thoroughly enjoyed working with Severn Trent Water on this brand new Play in a Day workshop based around water efficiency.

"The Play in a Day project enables children and young people to gain a deeper insight into the chosen topic in a fun and creative way. It also helps to develop their dramatic skills as well as enhancing speaking and listening skills, encouraging team-building, and developing self-confidence. Not only do the children and young people taking part in the day gain a better understanding, but the group of students watching their peers perform at the end of the day also benefit from the event."

During February, Severn Trent Water and Konflux Theatre in Education group will be visiting Riverside Business College, St Paul's Catholic School, New College, Brockington College, Castle Donnington College, The Stonehill High School, Ibstock Community College and Mount Grace High School. All of these schools have also been involved in a water and money saving initiative between Leicestershire County Council and Severn Trent Water. This initiative aims to cut water use and water wastage by making modifications to the schools' existing water system and educating pupils and staff on how to be more water efficient. 137 schools across Leicestershire County are currently involved in this initiative.
