Police Federation respond to appointment of new home secretary

12 May 2010

Responding to the announcement that Theresa May has been appointed home secretary, Paul McKeever, chairman, Police Federation of England and Wales says;

"We wish to congratulate Theresa May on her appointment as home secretary. This is one of the most important offices of state any politician can hold and responsibility for the safety and security of the nation rests with this post.

"Understandably, the new home secretary will need to assess what is happening in policing; look at the unplanned and haphazard reforms that have affected policing over the last decade, and consider what course she wishes to pursue in the future.

"As the voice of 140,000 police officers across England and Wales, we stand ready and willing to share our experience and knowledge of the sharp end in order to work together with the home secretary to ensure we have a police service fit for purpose with public safety and security at its heart."
