Ofsted report on the teaching of modern languages

Commenting on the Ofsted report ‘Modern Languages – Achievement and Challenge 2007-10’, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers the largest teachers’ union said;
“It is excellent news that primary schools are making such good progress in teaching modern languages. In secondary schools, languages have long been among the subjects most severely affected by piecemeal changes to the secondary curriculum, especially the mistaken decision to make modern foreign languages optional.
“It is vital that the efforts made by schools to develop language learning are supported by funding and resources, including ensuring that children have access to lessons taught by qualified specialist language teachers and to ensure effective links and liaison opportunities between secondary schools and partner primary schools.
“The opportunity should exist for all children to learn a modern foreign language up to and beyond 16. Many young people may well regret in the future that they didn’t take a foreign language. This is precisely the opposite of what should happen in a world where national boundaries are less and less important.
