NASUWT questions the ability of an unrepentant secretary of state to act fairly on behalf of children and young people
2 March 2011
Commenting on today's statement by the Secretary of State on school capital, following the successful Building Schools for the Future judicial review proceedings brought by six local councils, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:
“For the Secretary of State to present the outcome of the legal proceedings as a victory for him shows contempt for the judicial process, underlines the arrogant way in which this Coalition dismisses or denigrates any opposition, and the contempt it has for consultation.
“The Secretary of State's remarks suggest that he is continuing to abuse his powers and raise a fundamental issue about his ability to make decisions fairly on behalf of all children and young people.
“Clearly, the Secretary of State is unrepentant and, consequently, the education system will continue to suffer from the scrapping of BSF and the other reckless decisions which have been taken without consultation or consideration of the consequences.”
