Home secretary says police and crime commissioners won't undermine operational independence
16 September 2010
Home Secretary Theresa May yesterday told the Police Superintendent's Association that Police and Crime Commissioners won't undermine operational independence. She said:
"Let me make absolutely clear – Police and Crime Commissioners will in no way undermine the operational independence that you rightly hold so dear. They will not manage police forces and they will not be permitted to interfere in the day-to-day work of police officers."
The introduction of Police and Crime Commissioners in place of Police Authorities is one of the issues to be discussed at a 14th October Westminster Briefing Conference entitled Community Safety Partnerships Under the New Government.
